Paying Hope Forward, Guadalupano, Jose Hugo

“I came to GHP at the perfect time… they say its coincidence, but I think it was meant to be.”
Jose traveled to the US from Mexico in 2005. Soon after arriving he established his own business, a small garment factory. After being shut down, Jose traveled across the US for 3 months looking for new opportunities. Living a while in New York and then Connecticut, he returned to Los Angeles with nothing but clothes and a few blankets. After a few long difficult months, Jose found himself at the Guadalupe Homeless Project (GHP).
“When I arrived at GHP I had lost all sense of faith or hope. As I walked in for dinner I thought ‘how embarrassing to be asking for food,’ but my need was larger than my pride. I realized I needed to take advantage of this opportunity; I received shelter, food, a shower, and support. As comfortable as GHP was I didn’t want to stay forever, I didn’t want to be homeless forever.”
Jose is a man of many talents, never denying any opportunity. Jose has worked as a handy man, painter, and tailor. He specializes in custom tailoring and has a line of handmade products. “Everything I make I invest back in to my work. I love my job! I love thinking of new creations and putting my heart and passion in to each every piece.”
“Coming to GHP has been a blessing. Can you believe I have my own place and my rent paid a month in advance? The support I have received from GHP and Proyecto has been incredible. That’s why I volunteer; I hope that I can give back the inspiration and hope that was given to me.”
Jose currently volunteers everyday at GHP, serving as a mentor and inspiration. He is currently working as the tailor for The Jane and Joe Shoppe located in South Pasadena where he sells his handmade pillows and tote bags. He will soon begin to teach sewing classes to the men at GHP. Jose’s amazing story of triumph is just one example of how Proyecto Pastoral and our programs touch people’s lives and inspires them to do the same for others.
